Local Journalism in Crisis

This research documented the local journalism crisis and its implications for democratic participation. The work examined news deserts, layoffs, consolidation, and resulting impacts on community information and civic life.nnThe research also identified promising innovations: nonprofit news, collaborative journalism, community correspondents, and membership models. Analysis revealed conditions necessary for sustainable local journalism.nnFindings influenced journalism funders, policymakers, and practitioners, contributing to increased investment in local journalism innovation and policy attention to journalism’s public infrastructure role.
